China’s extraordinary Sunac Guangzhou Grand Theatre, located in the heart of southern China, presented a unique challenge. Theater designer Franco Dragone envisioned acrobatic flights, scenery changes that form part of the spectacle, and immersive audience experiences—so, it required an upgraded rigging system that was flexible enough to host a dazzling array of productions. TAIT stepped up, ready to turn this lofty vision into a breathtaking reality.
It was a huge task: alongside 25 versatile Big Tow winches, we installed three track and trolley systems to ensure smooth and precise transitions. And COVID-19’s logistical challenges meant installing a state-of-the-art rigging and performer flying system was far from simple.

To hit the theater’s Q4 2020 upgrade deadline, we worked tirelessly against the clock and a backdrop of multiple lockdowns. Despite these challenges, the system was installed on time and now allows the theater team to creatively choreograph central acrobatic flights, dramatic drops to the stage, and breathtaking 2D and 3D performer flights above the crowd.

Following this upgrade, the Sunac Guangzhou Grand Theatre now has the technical capability to create awe-inspiring visual spectacles—and the necessary infrastructure to cater even the most complex of shows. The countless touring musicals and theater productions that pass through the venue make use of state-of-the-art automation equipment to deliver spectacular performer flying experiences that leave audiences enthralled night after night.
