A harborside landmark, the Hong Kong Cultural Center is a multipurpose performance facility that first opened its doors in 1989. Continued use had meant little opportunity to upgrade what had become obsolete flying system components. Our TAIT team took on this unique challenge by using a phased approach to bring the Hong Kong Cultural Center up-to-date with the latest control infrastructure and winches.
The venue was originally built by the former Urban Council but has been under the direction of the Hong Kong Government’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department since 2000. We have a longstanding relationship with this government client and were chosen to complete a phased upgrade of the Hong Kong Cultural Center’s flying infrastructure.
We’d already completed an MCC upgrade, and this 2022 project was the final part of three winch upgrade phases to deliver a flying system that brought the venue in line with current machine safety standards. For the legendary Hong Kong Performing Arts Center, we engineered, manufactured, installed, and commissioned a bespoke winch design based on theater and touring production favorite, the BT2-200 winch, which offers a raft of customization options and features low-noise brakes for whisper-quiet operation. Winches were Installed in a RORO configuration to support the counterweight-assist operation of 26 axes.
Despite ongoing global supply chain issues, the winch upgrade work was completed on time and within the venue’s schedule and the Hong Kong Cultural Center now features a flying system to rival any entertainment space in the world.
