During the festive season, Swarovski wanted to dazzle the denizens of New York City with a showcase dedicated to the crystal star that tops the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. Working closely with the Rockefeller Center’s operator Tishman Speyer, TAIT embarked on a race against time to install the star and a gleaming kiosk that would immerse visitors in the holiday spirit.
Swarovski has supplied the Rockefeller Center’s festive crystal tree-topper every year since 2004. But for 2018, it decided to do something different, commissioning a new design from celebrated NYC architect Daniel Libeskind. The new Swarovski Star is over nine feet tall, with 70 spikes covered with three million Swarovski crystals. Lifting the 900-pound star into place would require precise engineering and careful handling – which is why Tishman Speyer called on TAIT to do the job.
At the same time as installing the star, TAIT constructed a 146-square-foot pop-up boutique that reflected Swarovski’s luxurious aesthetic. Like the Swarovski Star, the multi-faceted kiosk was designed by Daniel Libeskind and fabricated by Orion HD in Rhode Island.
Inside its polished metal walls, visitors could view a duplicate of Libeskind’s star and buy exclusive Swarovski merchandise and holiday ornaments. Our team meticulously managed every detail of the installation, swiftly assembling the structures and bringing a touch of fuss-free festive magic to Midtown Manhattan.
