Istana Budaya – translated as ‘Palace of Culture’ – is Malaysia's premier venue for all forms of theater but had been using the same stage machinery and controls for over twenty years. TAIT was tasked by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, & Culture with designing and managing the upgrades to below- and over-stage machinery and components to bring this cosmopolitan venue up to modern standards.

Located in the heart of Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, Istana Budaya hosts a wide variety of local and international performances, including operetta, opera, classical concerts, and musical theater. First opened in 1999, the “Palace of Culture” machinery and controls were once cutting-edge, but with maintenance becoming difficult due to obsolete components, the Istana Budaya’s operators decided on a top-to-bottom refit of machinery and automation equipment. This gave us the opportunity to upgrade equipment to modern SIL3 safety requirements and also install the latest control technology.

With the Palace of Culture venue open for business, we couldn’t replace every element at once, so we scoped an approach which would allow the venue to operate as normal. The work included controls design and machinery upgrades, including adding EtherCAT fieldbus communication and machine safety functions to achieve SIL3 requirements. We provided on-site training to the venue’s technical teams to familiarize them with their new epiQ control consoles. This unified approach to operating both over- and below-stage machinery simplifies control and brings numerous safety benefits. Istana Budaya now has the machinery and automation capabilities to match its peerless ambition.
